New Music Tip: Current Top Five

You know those times when you are just totally sick of all the music you have?
In my book, its far worse than looking in the closet and hating all your clothes. At least with clothes you can throw on anything and still enjoy your day. Shit... you could even go without them if you wanted.
So if you are at the stage where you wish your music was more like nudity (??? No idea what that means)...
Take a few recommendations from me.
Here is the...
WHERE IN THE WORLD CURRENT TOP FIVE

#5- Two Gallants "The Bloom and The Blight"

I haven't even thought of this band in years. I came across them randomly while working at Bonnaroo in 2008. I actually found their self-titled album on the ground.
I must say, for a piece of trash... it sure turned out to be "another man's treasure".
I played the shit outta that record and then, like most records, I forgot about it.
Now... dudes are back. And have found me sorta randomly again.
This record is pretty damn good. The sound is much more aggro and "filled out" than I remember them but it works.
3.7 out of 5 stars

#4- Menomena "Moms"

I love this band. Their last record "Mines" was absolutely brilliant from beginning to end.
It seems that there have been some changes in the band and although still very much a Menomena record... something seems to be missing.
If you have never listened to Menomena, you'll never know the difference.
So put it on and enjoy.

#3- Why? "Mumps, Etc."

If you know me, you know that I am quite cynical when I realize a rapper that I like is white. I know, I know... that's stupid. It's not racist (because that would be sorta weird)... it's just that I feel slighted. When I listen to an artist, I paint a certain picture of them in my mind. When it turns out to be WAY off... I get upset.
This did not happen when I listened to Why?'s new record.
Probably because I knew he was white just from the cover art haha
But either way, this dude from Cinncinati is quite talented. Not only as an emcee but also a singer/songwriter. His beats are complex and his lyrics are riddled with truth and a sharp sense of humor and humility.
This is a special record for sure.
3.9 out of 5 stars

#2- Black Pistol Fire "Big Beat '59"

Never heard of them but loved the name so gave em a chance.
First impression... WOW.
This Canadian duo often draw comparisons to The Black Keys and The White Stripes for obvious reasons. #1- They are a duo. #2- They rock.
*Disclaimer- this record is really hard to listen to sitting down. It's definitely a drink a beer, break the bottle, stab your friend, and then hug him and tell him you're sorry and that you love him.
Good ol' rock and roll.
4 out of 5 stars

#1- The xx "Coexist"

I think it's safe to say that everyone knows that this album leaked early. It was bound to. Hardly is their a band these days that warrant such hype.
The xx blew everyone away in 2009 with their debut record and then left everyone salivating as they waited for another fix. Jamie xx kept some held over with about a bajillion mixtapes, collaborations and one off tracks but none were an xx record.
Now there is one.
And its excellent.
First impression... "a depressive minimalist's wet dream". And I mean that in the most positive of ways.
It's beautiful, sad, darky, moody... all the things you would expect from an xx record.
Might not be littered with the "single worthy" tracks that their first record had but that doesn't matter.
It's great music and you should play it on repeat.
Hopefully not for 3 years like the last one.
