The entire Arab world has been seeing lots of changes lately.
Yemen, Lebanon, Tunisia, and now, most notably; Egypt.
What started on Jan 25 as a grassroots, social media campaign, has no grown into full scale revolution. The streets all over Egypt have been a war zone since.
Because of our ties to Egypt (with Zabaleen), we have been monitoring the situation closely and as it unfolds.
Saturday saw the majority of the violence as stones were hurled, tear gas thrown, guns fired, trucks, cars, and buildings set ablaze. Over 100 people lost their lives attempting to bring down the Hosni Mubarak regime. A regime that has ruled over its people with a cruel and iron fist for 30 years.
Once viewed as a beaten down people who could never rise up to the power that held them down, the Egyptians are rising. And rising. And the empire is about to fall.
This morning, in a half hearted and useless speech, Mubarak fired his entire cabinet only to swear in a "new" VP and PM. Both of which were always considered to be his "right hand men".
And both are military men. Which may explain the complete disappearing act of the police and the new, more peaceful presence of the army on the streets.
As protesters continue to march and demonstrate the government is on the run. This wont end. Not even hired thugs and released criminals can stop the people from fighting the tyranny.
Because the internet, sms, cell phones, and landlines have all been shut down for the most of 2 days, we have been able to reach Mourad.
He told us (as of Thursday night), that he and his family are staying far away from it. They are watching and waiting from Manshayet Nasser.
When I spoke to him this morning, we got as far as we could with the language barrier and then he said this, in his broken english; "Hosni Mubarak crazy!"
This told me that he and his family are safe and in relatively high spirits.
If you have not been watching, I recommend checking out the LIVE STREAM FROM AL JAZEERA ENGLISH
Also, there are loads of amazing photographs hitting the web now. HERE ARE SOME OF THE BEST.
Stay tuned....
The Revolution will be televised.
