Cairo - Day 2

Okay Okay Doha is more south than Cairo.
Cry me a (Nile) River.
Now that that is out of the way.... let's talk about Cairo- Day 2.

Woke up early and spotted a member of the Zabaleen sorting cans in the street from my window... so like any good little super hero (or DP), I sprung into action.
I took the camera down and shot for about an hour.
I quickly learned a few things:
1- The Zabaleen are like apparitions. They don't stick around long. When they are done in one spot, they quickly disappear.
2- Cairo in the morning is a COMPLETELY different world from Cairo at night.
3- NO ONE speaks English (at least not to me)

When I came back, we had a little cross-cunt breakfast (thanks Lauren for the spelling of such a proper French baked good).
After said breakfast, we went exploring.

The metro....
hmmm..... what is there to say other than it costs 1 Egyptian pound (about 18 cents) and it is a fucking mad house. Packed ear to ear with people.
We had no real destination so we jumped off when it became overwhelming.
Where we were..... no clue.
BUT.... we made the best of it and did like true travelers do....
took photos.

Once we had our fill, we jumped in a cab and headed back to Khan El Khalili.
This time, we actually saw the place.
All the side streets. All the hidden corners. All the places tourist are told NOT to go.
And it was AMAZING.
We found some great little antique shops and rummaged through the curiosities.

We had a meeting scheduled for 7pm but that got canceled, so we strolled around downtown.
Arm in arm in arm we laughed through the night.
Carrie punched a child in the face. Really really.
We thought about seeing a film from the Cairo International Film Festival but decided to get some whiskey, beer, and wine and head back to The Carlton to set up our own little makeshift theatre.
Gathered on the balcony under the clouds, sipping whiskey, fighting off ants, and watching "London River"....
there's no where else I'd rather be (and with no one else.... Carrie and Lauren, you are the greatest)

Tomorrow morning.... the realness begins.
We leave at 9am for a meeting with the leader of Spirit of Youth (an organization in the heart of the Zabaleen community).
The excitement I feel is unmatched to anything I have felt before.

Goodnight Cairo.
Goodnight World.

**We have some great photos from Lauren's camera but the internet here is too weak to allow me to upload them. I apologize for the lack of visual reference. I promise to have them up soon...come hell or high water
