THE FILM HOUSE X THE ANVIL ROOMS

Here at The Film House, we have been swimming in films.
If we aren't shooting something, we're planning something. If we aren't planning something, we're editing something.
We have lots on our plates.
Luckily for us, what is on our plate is OH SO DELICIOUS.

We recently made 3 films for The Anvil Rooms.
If you haven't been to The Anvil Rooms... You are seriously missing out.
Great atmosphere, great staff and most importantly... amazing food.

The outcome of the collaboration can be seen below.
We are really proud of these films and hope you like them as much as we do.

RESPECT RAMADAN: A Reminder from The Film House

With the help of an amazing team and incredible actor...
I recently directed a web video to conicide with the first day of Ramadan.
For those that are unfamiliar with Ramadan, listening to music (and anything sexual in nature) is completely forbidden for the month.
Hope you like it.

JLK and the Sea: Eat Your Heart Out Hemingway

I have always been influenced by the sea. As the story goes, even in the dead of winter, if there was a pool, a river, a lake, or the icy Atlantic...
I was in my frog suit with matching froggy flippers, making a run for it.
Purple lips and knocking knees were always the outcome but that didn't matter to me.
The water called my name.
To this day, I would be hard pressed to think of a place that I have traveled where I did not get in the water no matter the tide, current or temperature.
It's a must.

Now although I love the water...
I also fear it deeply.
A fear that is born from an atomic wedgie and a film.

The atomic wedgie happened to me in a neighborhood kid named Robbie's pool.
He and my cousin Chal were good friends. One summer day they invited me along.
Like all things with prepubescent boys... things got rough in the pool.
Next thing I know, I am on the receiving end of a two handed, overhead wedgie dunk combo.
Between the pain of the mesh netting tearing into my ass and the amount of water I was swallowing every time they lifted me and plunged me back under only to rip my juvenile crotch to bits over and over... I blacked out.
Next thing I know, I am on my back staring into panicked faces, spewing up under chlorinated pool water.

The second reason being: JAWS. Obviously.
Not because of the terror on screen... I always loved that.
The terror of one afternoon when I was 9 or so and my brother caught a Great White shark off the coast of Cape May, NJ.
We rushed down to the beach after an excited call from my dad and uncle.
The windows down in the wood paneled station wagon, screaming south.
When we arrived, the shark was suspended by it's tail and dangled in all of it's terrifying glory in the parking lot of the dock. People snapped photos, gawked, and glared. There it was.
The most feared predator in the world.
As I joined the group for a photo, fear grew inside me. Shoulders were nudging me closer and closer to the beast. It's matte grey skin still wet and shining. It's glaring white teeth bared toward the concrete.
Someone lined up the photo in the viewfinder and just before blurting out the standard "CHEESE"...
My uncle pushed the shark toward me and screamed.

I can't remember what happened next...
Maybe I pissed my pants. Maybe I shit. Maybe I cried like a little girl and ran away.
I just don't recall.
But what happened that day wasn't just a public embarrassment.
It was the birth of a fear that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
BEWARE OF GREAT WHITE SHARKS WHEN THEY ARE ON LAND!

With that being said, I am also not one for killing.
If you know me, you know I have a fair share of hunting gone awry tales in my repertoire.
SO fishing does not seem to be an activity that would rank up there on my list of hobbies.
But as it goes... Some things just happen.

Thanks to Dale's endless internet searches for the biggest, baddest, most rare and exclusive spots around the world for adrenaline junky activities... He, Steve, and I were booked in for a fishing trip in Oman.

There were links and articles being sent back and forth leading up to the trip.
This was not going to be a leisurely cast, grab a beer and watch a bobber type of trip.
This was going to be a grueling, physically intense, pain riddled, torture fest in hopes that we would land a GT (Giant Trevally).

The trip was organized through a site called No Boundaries Oman.
The group is run by a giant, hulking dude named Ed.
He has set up a great little spot in a tiny southern Omani town called Ashwaymiyah.
Decent villas, great boats, amazing samosas, and amazing gear.

Now we are by no means expert fisherman and we had never been popping or jigging (unless you count that time I think I pop and locked at Silk City in 2002 during a Run DMC track), but we did our reasearch and came as prepared as we possibly could.
Well... we were wrong.
Our gear was wrong, our physiques were wrong, our attitudes a bit too laid back or something... but that was basically the end of our time with Ed.
The rest of the trip was spent with 2 amazing dudes, Yasser and Mohammed, who would show us a great time.

Oman Fishing Trip / Hallaniyat Islands Southern Oman
We set out every morning before the sun was fully up. Sometimes staying in close to the coast to hit bait balls and the big boys coming in to munch on them. Other times we went out over an hour area to fish secret GT spots that were legended to be swarming with record breakers.
Most of what we got were back breakers.

CATCHES BY DAY:
DAY ONE
Puffer Fish
Black Bream
Queen Fish
 Barracuda
Mahi Mahi
2 x Tuna

We battled waves, landed fish, missed fish, swam with squids and eels, saw turtles copulating, watched a Sail fish take flight, got sun burned lips, tore muscles, found muscles we never knew we had... but most of all... had an amazing time.

If you ask me now whether or not fishing is going to be a constant thing in my life...
I wouldn't know how to answer.
I guess you'll have to propose a destination that is just too good to refuse.

But like Ernest Hemingway said in The Old Man and the Sea:
"Don't be a pussy. Live a little."

*For more photos, check out Dale's Flickr page
*Everything that came out of the sea, went right back into the sea. No Boundaries operates a strict catch and release with barbless hooks policy.
**With the exception of one Mahi Mahi and 2 squids. They became dinner.

REVIEW: Chris Tucker in Doha

Qatar is no secret.
Qatar is flashy. Qatar is in your face. Qatar is the rooster strutting through the hen house with it's chest puffed and ruffled. It's shiniest feathers on display.
With visits and performances in the recent years by everyone from the A- List to the Z- List... it is home to one of the world's most confusing and "WTF?!" evoking events calendars.
From a film shoot by Kanye West to a beach party with Sisqo.
Juwan Howard watching Oscar Pistorious race a horse.
Bryan Adams selling out shows and Arrested Development playing a golf course.
Harlem Globetrotters in a shopping mall to no-name WWE wrestlers duking it out in a Burger King parking lot to Macy Gray playing a private party.
Events are often ill planned, ill promoted and ill choices.
But sometimes, there is the event that pops up and sparks my interest just enough to get me in the car, pushing through hordes of the same faces, and into a seat.

Chris Tucker at the Sheraton was the event last night.

Now... don't get me wrong... I do have a soft spot in my heart for Chris Tucker.
Smokey is undeniably one of the greatest characters in a stoner comedy ever.
His early years of stand up are hilarious. His Michael Jackson impressions are spot on.
His character and hair in 5th Element... well... that's a whole other story.
BUT... with all that said... My expectations were VERY low.
There is no denying what an appearance by Chris Tucker in Doha means.
He's broke.
It's no secret why wash ups and has beens flock to this part of the world.
But in their defense... Isn't that why we are all here?

We arrived 30 minutes early and waded through the sea of casual, red faced expats sipping Heineken bottles in the lobby. Every 9 steps stopping to say hello or casually head nodding at a friend, acquaintance or occasional person that I thought looked like someone else.
Entering the colossal auditorium space, it became evident to me... it didn't matter what you paid for your tickets. Every seat was equally shit and we all ended up watching the giant, poorly white balanced "live feed" monitors above the stage. Staring at the monitor for so long also made me forget at times that Chris Tucker was actually on that "stage" in the front of this room.
A warm up act (totally forget his name) took the stage and immediately set the tone for "no rules apply here tonight". Cocks, balls, Viagra and even some talk about church got the crowd remotely warmed up.
As he left the stage, people smiled at each other with the accepted and unspoken "Yeah. This is pretty cool, huh" face.
Then, with the microphone still on backstage, the opening act muttered some things and opened the side door to the stage. We all expected a "And now ladies and gentlemen.... CHRIS TUCKER!" but instead we got "Uhhh... What?... Uhhh....Ok.... Ladies and gentlemen... there will now be a 15 minute intermission".
A collective "HUH?" mummered across the auditorium.
Why have a warm up act and THEN an intermission? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?
The flood lights switched on like they had corralled all the vampires of the world into one place under the guise of a comedy show just to lock the door and melt them with the UV bulbs.
People got up and headed out of the auditorium and back to the bar, outside of a smoke, or just left altogether.
We stayed sitting as Christian rock music blared out from the sound system.
Our eyes darted around the room to see if anyone else was hearing the calls to "Jesus on high" and "My God, an awesome God".
Was this some kind of subliminal brain washing technique? Were we all being subjected to a cleverly disguised sermon?!?!
Finally... The lights dimmed and a video presentation of all of Chris Tucker's starring roles played on the monitors. Out of synch and poorly exported, the video had as much effect as if someone just took the mic and said "Now ladies and gentlemen... take our your iPhones and youtube your favorite Chris Tucker moment!"
He came out to a roar of applause as he shrieked and squealed into the microphone. The sheer volume made my ears feel like they were dripping blood. He wasted no time setting the tone. Cocks and balls and thobes.
As he rambled through a pretty disjointed and seemingly unprepared set, some things became clear:
1- His impressions are still bang on.
2- His jokes went on just a bit too long.
3- His financial situation became a bit depressing and slightly echoed the late days of Lenny Bruce.
4- Blatantly stole jokes from Chappelle and Aziz Ansari.
5- His suit pants were just not made for shining lights and big screens.
6- Probably shouldn't have ended the set with rape jokes... but hey... it was a long night.
7- He gave people their monies worth staying on stage for what felt like 2 hours.
8- The man is indeed gifted and can still bring a smile to my face.

All in all... Going into the night with low expectations might have been the best thing I could have possibly done. Had I hoped for the Chris Tucker of the past... I may have been disappointed or saddened by the shadow of his former self strutting across the stage.

As we walked out chuckling, I snagged a 4 per page flyer from under a Hummer's windshield.
Yet more proof of Qatar's "WTF?!" event calendar:
THE SUPREMES AND THE TEMPTATIONS LIVE IN QATAR

But I will give credit where credit is due...
Qatar is trying.

Introducing... THE FILM HOUSE

I have eluded to. Hinted at it. Teased it.
But have yet to truly "spill the beans".
Until now.
Prepare for the beans to scatter.

I have indeed changed directions slightly on the path of "careerdom".
Having been lucky enough to meet the right people who have faith in me and my ideas...
I am proud to introduce...
Since our inception a few months back, we have begun to build an A-Team of talented filmmakers and artists from around the world as well as start producing work for some of our favorite international and local companies.
We are looking to raise the bar on production in Doha from photo shoots to feature films.
There isn't anything we can't do and we plan to show that soon.

Although most of our current projects are still pretty "secret"...
We are proud to share one of our published works/collaborations.
This photo appears on Levis501.com microsite that has been set up to inspire and celebrate a major milestone for the Levi's brand.
The photo was taken by The Film House's Omar Khalifa and features our favorite model/designer/blogger/rad girl, Carla Mallari.

Even though we are over the moon about this photo...
This is only a taster of what is to come.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled.
THE FILM HOUSE is here.
